In our line of work, hair and makeup go hand in hand. They are best friends, they play off each other, and when they are both on point-you feel more confident than ever. The first step to great hair days is having healthy hair. Here are a few simple professional tips to keep your locks flowing and glowing all year long.
Don’t overwash your hair:
Wash it sometimes. But not every day. Washing your hair every day can actually dry it out or weigh it down. Washing once or twice a week should do! Sounds scary right? It isn’t. Added bonus- on those days where you don’t wash your hair it shortens your morning routine (buying you some time to hit that snooze button). You’ve heard it before and I am going to say it again, natural hair oils are GOOD for your hair. Let them work their magic.
Make dry shampoo your best friend. As you stroll the aisles of Sephora or Ulta you will notice that there are a plethora of dry shampoo brands and varieties. Find the one that works best for your hair type and get familiar with it. At first, dry shampoo takes a little getting used too, but once you get the hang of it you will fall in love.
What will you do with all the extra time in the morning?
Buy quality products:
For those days when you do wash your hair, make sure you have a good shampoo and conditioner on hand. You know that saying “you get what you pay for”? It rings true in all things in life, including hair products.
It can be overwhelming when picking a shampoo and conditioner, but you aren’t alone! Ask your hairdresser for suggestions. Your stylist is already very familiar with your hair type and will be able to suggest something that works just right, without having any negative effects.
Make heat the enemy (as often as possible):
I’m a girl I know its almost impossible to NEVER use a heated hair tool. But for those times when you have too, protect your hair.
Protect your hair before styling. Protect your hair after styling. And protect your hair everywhere in between.
- Before you use a straightener, curling iron, or crimper (yes, they’re back), be sure to use a thermal protect spray on your hair.
- Once your hair is styled and you’re ready for the day it never hurts to spray some UV protectant on the finished product! Especially if your hair is color treated.
- Oil treatments, leave in conditioner and hair masks-oh my! When you are home for the night, get in your pajamas, put on Dexter, make some tea and throw in a hair mask or oil treatment. You can either DIY or buy one wherever you buy your hair products.
You can also use your blow dryer on a lower heat setting, and keep it farther from your hair when drying. You could also invest in an ionic hairdryer which dries the hair faster (therefore minimizing heat exposure).

Until next time, may your hair grow and your skin glow.
